Crazy Horse - Black Hills, South Dakota
Crazy Horse Memorial is one of the most beautiful horse statues in America. Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota, the original mountain carving began in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski (who had also worked on Mt. Rushmore passed away in 1982). Korczak was inspired to do the mountain carving when he received a letter in 1939 from Chief Henry Standing Bear, which stated in part "My fellow chiefs and I would like the white man to know that the red man has great heroes, too."
The monument is carved out of Thunderhead Mountain on land considered sacred by some Native Americans, between Custer and Hill City, roughly 8 miles away from Mount Rushmore. The memorial is strictly non-profit with no state or federal funding. Funding for completion of the mountain carving depends on income from fund raising events which sponsors Native-American cultural events and educational programs.Crazy Horse or Thašuŋka Witko, named after his father in his native Lakota language, translated meant "His-Horse-is-Crazy." He was born around 1845 and passed away September 5, 1877 and was a respected war leader of the Oglala Lakota, who fought against the U.S. federal government in an effort to preserve the traditions and values of the Lakota way of life.
